Today, there are over 3 million truck drivers in the United States. Workers in this growing occupation are at a risk for a range of occupational health-induced conditions. Mental health can easily be put on the back burner as truckers often spend large amounts of time alone, working long hours in isolated conditions. In a study published by the US National Library of Medicine, a random sample of 316 male truck drivers between the ages of 23 and 76 were given surveys at a large truck stop located within a 100-mile mile radius of Greensboro, North Carolina. Surveyed truckers were found to have significant issues affecting their mental health, such as loneliness (27.9%), depression (26.9%), chronic sleep disturbance (20.6%), anxiety (14.5%), and other emotional problems (13%).

Many truck drivers suffer from mental health issues but are reluctant to seek the help they need because they fear the risk of losing their medical certification. By staying on top of your mental health and taking the necessary precautions, such as taking advantage of Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), can help to reduce the many stressors that come with the occupation and enhance over-all mental health.
